This is the second part of a two‐part article on alternative filtration technologies (AFTs), technologies that are often simpler to operate than the filtration systems found in conventional water treatment plants. Last month's column discussed how AFTs are evaluated for approval and offered some tips for selecting an appropriate AFT. This month's column examines pitfalls to avoid regarding the operation and maintenance of AFTs such as excessive pressure differential buildup, excessive use of cartridge filters, and pretreatment that compromises an AFT's efficiency.
