In his column, AWWA Executive Director Jack Hoffbuhr discusses what it means to be a professional. He believes that it is a mix of privilege and obligation and is built on a body of knowledge and experience. It also carries with it an obligation to society to use the tools for the common good. He discusses his personal criteria for measuring professionalism in the water industry, based on the critical obligation of providing the best possible water service and, in so doing, preserving the public health, ensuring public safety, and becoming responsible stewards of the earth's precious water resources. He cites the degree of commitment to this obligation, and also, how the aspiring professionals conduct themselves in discourse and debate as two means of measuring the degree of professionalism a person has.
