This month's column discusses the AWWA sponsored study of infrastructure needs at 20 US water utilities. Supported by the Water Industry Technical Action Fund, the study was designed and carried out by a team of consultants and members of AWWA staff and Water Utility Council (WUC) groups in cooperation with the volunteer participating utilities. The study report complements the growing body of related research by estimating the nation's projected investment needs to replace buried drinking water pipes and associated appurtenances based on a detailed examination of the actual infrastructure replacement needs at 20 large and medium‐size US water utilities. Cost projections are given, along with study recommendations, and lists of participating utilities and contributors.
