This article discusses change in the water industry and suggests that one way to embrace change is to study the trends and issues affecting water utilities and related organizations. It discusses 14 important trends in the water industry that are originally discussed in a comprehensive study that researched the emerging trends affecting associations such as the American Water Works Association. They include: leadership's role; value/return on investment; responsiveness; governance; revenue sources; technology usage; change loops; generational issues; workforce; outsourcing and co‐sourcing; competition and alliances; consolidation and mergers; globalization; and, image‐building. Also published as a book chapter in “Excellence in Action: Water Utility Management in the 21st Century”, published in 2001 by the American Water Works Association, order number 20495.
