This column gives a brief description of the AWWA Research Foundation and how it obtains financing for its projects that provide the information required for generating sound science for the development and implementation of and compliance with the regulations developed under the auspices of the Safe Drinking Water Act. Even though the primary focus is on large water utilities, most of the science generated can be applied to systems of all sizes and types. Research topics include: source protection; treatment; distribution systems; analytical techniques; utility management; and, health effects.
