This column describes Six Sigma, a quality discipline that focuses on product and service excellence to create a culture that demands perfection. Its key goal is to achieve excellence by reducing defects in processes, products and services. Using systematic breakthrough methods, Six Sigma required manufacturing managers to measure, analyze, improve, and control the membrane manufacturing processes. One area of improvement discussed in this article is the concentration of a chemical component used to manufacture the membrane.
