This article discusses the current status of the 1996 amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act. The US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) has completed all actions required of it to date; however, many new regulations have been issued or are in development. This article lists the new regulations, with special emphasis on improving source water protection; difficult decisions that the arsenic regulation poses; finalization of the radon rule; the successful funding assistance of the State Revolving Fund; infrastructure funding gaps; tort litigation concerns; and, how capacity development will take center stage.
