Why globalization is occurring Information and electronic technologies have removed communications barriers and allow companies to assess needs and access markets they can serve. In the water business, this means the ability to serve large populations in developing countries as well as overcome financial and resource limitations in developed countries. Globalization is unidirectionally recognized in North America; that is, we expect to export but not import knowledge, expertise, and products. Globalization is not purely a water utility phenomenon, but North American utilities have underestimated the size and resource base of globally based firms.
