Organisms that may not be well known to water suppliers are highlighted. The AWWA Research Division Microbiological Contaminants Committee reviewed four bacterial microorganisms considered of greatest concern to the water industry: Mycobacterium avium complex, Helicobacter pylori , pathogenic Escherichia coli , and Campylobacter jejuni. To help the water quality specialist, this report describes each organism; reviews its health effects; summarizes information on its occurrence, waterborne outbreaks, and treatment; discusses analytical procedures; and outlines needed research.
