On Dec. 16, 1998, the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) published the Interim Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (IESWTR) 1 as required by the Safe Drinking Water Act. The purpose of the IESWTR is to improve the control of microbial pathogens, including Cryptosporidium , in drinking water and to ensure microbiological quality as water systems comply with the Stage 1 Disinfectants/Disinfection By‐products (D/DBP) Rule. 2 USEPA estimates that endemic illness from Cryptosporidium will decrease by 110,000 to 463,000 cases annually. The IESWTR will reduce the likelihood of an outbreak of cryptosporidiosis by providing a larger margin of safety.
