The revised federal facility provisions of the 1996 Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) amendments mean that federal agencies must plan carefully so that compliance with SDWA regulations is achieved within the specified time. Federal facilities will be treated in the same manner as nongovernmental entities and must abide by compliance schedules and reporting requirements to avoid enforcement action from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency or the primacy state or from citizen suits.
