In this article, the author attempts to provide a balanced view of the value of chlorine dioxide as an alternative disinfectant for drinking water. Despite the advantages of chlorine dioxide as an adjunct to free or combined chlorine, water suppliers, consultants, and academic and regulatory professionals continue to express concern about its potential health effects. This article discusses the major health effects of chlorine dioxide and offers practical ways to reduce the potential risks associated with its use.
