New requirements and schedules have dramatically accelerated the pace of regulatory activity. The US Environmental Protection Agency is in the process of responding to the mandates imposed by the 1996 Safe Drinking Water Act amendments. New requirements and regulatory schedules have dramatically accelerated the pace of regulatory activity. Several new rules are mandated, such as those that cover microorganisms and disinfection by‐products, arsenic, uranium, radon, groundwater disinfection, and filter backwash recycling. New contaminants for regulation will be identified using a listing process through which the agency will decide whether candidate contaminants warrant regulation.
