In this letters column, two readers question the appearance of an advertisement in the Journal from the Oxygenated Fuels Association and the American Methonal Institute. Both readers implicitly link the two groups with methyl tertiary‐butyl ether (MTBE), an additive found in gasoline and a potential threat to water systems. The authors address the contradictory message of the American Water Works Association running advertisements from these two groups. The Journal editor responds to the letters.
