As the 21st century approaches, questions are beginning to arise regarding the future of water supply in the United States. A US Census Bureau forecast projects an increase of 129 million people in the United States by the year 2050. Such an increase in water demand could eventually translate into chronic water shortages affecting both the quality of life and the economic well‐being of much of the population. This article expresses the opinion of the author on the importance of making urban water supply in the 21st century a national public policy priority.
