In Western Australia, a traditional water utility rose to meet the challenge of rapid improvement. The Western Australian water industry went through a revolution in 1995. Now more commercial in focus, it is making a greater contribution to Western Australia's economy. At the same time, improved regulatory structures have ensured that standards are met for product quality, service response, environmental impact, and conservation. Pricing is moving to a user‐pays, full‐cost basis, with subsidies explicitly funded by the government.
