During this century, Americans served by public water systems have come to expect safe drinking water whenever they turn on a faucet. Since passage of the Safe Drinking Water Act, the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) has set drinking water quality standards‐‐maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) or treatment techniques‐‐for health protection. Although carrying out best management and operating practices is costly, it is important that water treatment be optimized in order to protect the health of the community and meet the requirements of the Information Collection Rule (ICR). Since data obtained under the ICR will be made available for public review and comment, the time to optimize treatment is now, before problems arise.
