All relevant regulations must be considered during planning. Membrane concentrate disposal is regulated under several federal laws, and state and local governments may impose additional requirements. Regulatory requirements are complex and, in many cases, the federal–state–local regulatory maze can be perplexing. The method or methods used for membrane disposal determine which regulatory requirements must be met. A comprehensive regulatory compliance strategy ensures that the appropriate permitting and other regulatory requirements are met. With careful planning, membrane concentrate disposal can be done in an environmentally acceptable way that satisfies all regulatory requirements.
