Accuracy of head loss measurement can be improved if monitoring equipment is installed right along with the transmission main. Accurately measuring head loss in large‐diameter transmission mains is difficult and is therefore seldom done at all. However, if a section of transmission main is installed with provisions for measuring flow and head loss, the testing can be done easily and accurately, allowing better monitoring of long‐term trends in pipe roughness and carrying capacity.
