This article gives an overview of the process and events that have shaped the current debate over the regulation of disinfectants and disinfection by‐products (D‐DBPs) in the United States. Particular emphasis is placed on the technical uncertainties that complicate the establishment of health‐protective maximum contaminant levels for several disinfectants and their by‐products. In addition to a discussion of recent developments in the DBP arena, a retrospective of D‐DBP rule‐making history is provided.
