Articles in this section of the Journal are dedicated to providing current information about legislative and regulatory developments pertinent to the drinking water industry. They address needs and concerns of water utilities from a practical standpoint; they are not intended to reflect official positions or policies of AWWA. Frederick W. Pontius, AWWA regulatory engineer, prepared this article summarizing US Environmental Protection Agency approaches for establishing drinking water standards based on contaminant toxicology data. He will also coordinate development of future articles. Pontius monitors and evaluates legislation and regulations that affect the water industry, prepares official AWWA statements on drinking water issues, and represents the association at meetings, workshops, and study groups.
