Mr. Mannion discusses the image of AWWA to some outsiders: mammoth, cumbersome and difficult to change, like a supertanker trying to turn. While Mr. Mannion agrees that AWWA is a big organization and one perceived to be self‐shackled by old‐fashioned traditions and procedures, he contends it is not like a supertanker for neither AWWA nor the industry its serves is a rigid structure nor a single unit. Mr. Mannion wants the organization to attend to the image it projects, because image can help or hinder an organization in its mission. Mr. Mannion asks section members, who may be underestimating their impact on the overall impression created by the association, to look at whether their committees and programs are providing the quality of service and leadership needed, actively implementing the associations' official programs and positions, and representing the industry in their localities and within AWWA's international structure.
