The author points out several inaccuracies concerning the health significance of plastic pipe contained in the article entitled “Implementing a Lead Solder Ban” which appeared in the January 1988 Journal AWWA. The National Sanitation Foundation has explored, in detail, the health aspects of plastic pipe and has produced product standards which are continually revised. The NSF offers a certification program for components of plastic piping systems. Those manufacturers wishing to have the NSF stamp of approval must agree to a minimum of three unannounced plant inspections per year and have their product extraction tested by NSF one to three times a year depending on the product.
