This letter describes problems faced by water suppliers in California using chlorine dioxide treatment systems. Concerns about potential danger to dialysis patients prompted the California State Department of Health to shelve chlorine dioxide until evidence is available that will allow it to establish a concentration limit on chlorine dioxide and other alternative disinfectants in water entering dialysis water treatment systems.
