Computer control of the Hardhof groundwater plant is necessary to adhere to operational criteria stipulated by the canton of Zurich. Drawdown cannot exceed the licensed levels of the wells, and to maintain water quality, recharge of the wells from the Limmat River must be balanced against streamflow and the direction of runoff within the wellhead protection zones. The computer installation at Hardhof also assists with managing energy costs for the city's water supply and security systems for the physical plants.
