The question of whether or not it is feasible for utilities in the United States and Canada to fund an industry research program through voluntary subscription was discussed at the AWWA Annual Conference in Washington, D.C., June 25, 1985. Participants were: Fred Elwell, director of the Manchester (N.H.) Water Works, chairman of AWWA's Water Utility Council, and member of the AWWA Research Foundation's board of trustees: James V. LaFrankie, president of the American Water Works Company Inc. and chairman of the board of the National Association of Water Companies since 1978: and Duane Georgeson, assistant general manager‐water for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. James F. Manwaring, executive director of the AWWA Research Foundation, was the moderator.
