Revised primary drinking water regulations are being developed by the US Environmental Protection Agency in response to the requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act. National Interim Primary Drinking Water Regulations were established in 1975 with amendments in 1976, 1979, and 1980 for organic and inorganic chemicals, radionuclides, and microbiological contaminants. Development of the revised regulations will involve a comprehensive reassessment of the interim regulations and an examination of the experience gained from implementation of those regulations. This article describes these experiences and current considerations being evaluated for incorporation into the revised regulations.
