Open storage reservoirs formed by earthen embankments may be classified as facilities with a high seismic hazard potential, especially if the surrounding areas have been heavily developed. A geotechnical evaluation of 12 open embankment reservoirs was undertaken in Seattle, Wash., to determine the safety and seismic stability of the facilities in the event of earthquakes.
