Few water supply systems intentionally operated pumping equipment to conserve energy until energy costs began to account for an increasing portion of operations budgets. Modifications in operating procedures can reduce energy consumption and yield significant savings. One method of determining the most efficient procedures is to use an extended‐period computer model of a water system.
