The authors have studied the effects of Ca, Cd, Pb, and Mg in drinking water on cardiovascular disease in white Carneau pigeons. These effects are expressed in terms of blood pressure and the presence and severity of atherosclerosis in pigeons from each of 16 experimental groups. The presence of Pb or Cd in drinking water significantly increased both blood pressure and the number and size of aortic atherosclerotic plaques. However, the presence of Ca significantly reduced the effects of Cd or Pb on blood pressure and on the number and size of aortic plaques.
