This article compares European and American drinking water standards and regulations, and points out the deficiencies in U.S. controls. The author addresses the fact that the cost of drinking water treatment is often quantified and used as the basis for avoiding regulation, when public health protection should be of primary concern. Emphasis is also placed on the need for overall watershed protection and contamination prevention as opposed to dependence on expensive water treatment later.
