To reflect recent advances in scientific knowledge concerning the presence of contaminants in water supplies and their effects on human health, the World Health Organization (WHO) is revising the third edition of its International Standards for Drinking Water (1971) and preparing an internationally applicable set of Guidelines for Drinking Water Quality , taking into consideration the special practical needs of developing countries. This paper reviews some of the principles and approaches used in developing the new water quality guidelines.
