Although each water utility must plan, organize, and implement its own preventive maintenance program, certain general concepts must be understood by managers if they are to avoid costly breakdowns in equipment. Methods of instituting a formal program are discussed as well as the benefits that accrue from a well‐conceived maintenance program.
