The use of declining‐rate filtration in new plants is increasing because it produces better quality water and requires less available head loss. Critical to the conversion of constant‐rate or constant‐level filter plants to declining‐rate operations is the total head loss required for the declining‐rate plant and variations in the water level after conversion. Several alternatives for converting to declining‐rate filtration are available.
