Lack of an adequate water supply is now a thing of the past for the island of Vieques. On Feb. 10, 1978, a submarine water transmission main from mainland Puerto Rico to Vieques was inaugurated. This facility has dramatically increased the potable water supply for the island, eliminating the need for the operation of twelve low production wells whose waters have a high dissolved solids content. The most Important aspect of the project is that it guarantees a continuous and reliable flow of potable water to the 8000 inhabitants who have had to endure water shortages for many years.
