Analysis of sudden deaths in infancy over a thirty‐year period during which there were two changes in the sodium content of the water supply indicates that this form of mortality was significantly greater in the decade when sodium levels exceeded 100 mg/L. The findings are compatible with the hypothesis that hypernatraemia is a significant factor leading to crib death.
