As drinking water quality standards become more stringent and the need for filtration in water treatment increases, the use of pilot studies prior to filter design is increasing correspondingly. A review of filtration theory as it applies to pilot‐plant design is backed by descriptions of basic pilot‐scale equipment and analyses of actual studies.
