This article responds to the article “Corrosion Behavior of Ductile Cast‐Iron Pipe in Soil Environments” by W.F. Gerhold, which appeared in the December 1976 issue of JOURNAL AWWA, p. 674. In the studies done by the National Bureau of Standards, no direct comparison was made of gray and ductile iron pipe, only one site was common to both materials, the composition of the ductile iron pipe may not have been representative of commercial production, and pipe length and wall thickness were not given proper perspective in the tests.
