Conculsions drawn from operational experience of slow sand filters led to the installation of a gravel pre‐filter for removal of suspended solids from Ruhr River raw water. This unit removes up to 80 per cent of suspended solids when the volatile component of the solids is less than 20 per cent, and operates five years between backwashings.
