The transformation of the US from a rural, agricultural nation to an urban, industrialized world power has depended to a large degree on water supply and the engineering needed to provide large amounts of water for domes tic use, industry, and commerce. This article takes a brief look at the history of water‐supply systems, examines a few of the current problems facing the water‐supply field today, and looks at how the water‐supply service is currently rising to meet the challenges of another 200 years of growth.
