Alum is widely used in water treatment, but there are now investigations of other coagulants to be used instead because it is difficult to dispose of alum sludge. There is a relatively easy and inexpensive method available now, however, that makes possible pretreatment of alum sludge in such a way that it can be dewatered and reused.
