Ground‐water recharge became necessary in southern California during the 1950s because ground‐water levels along the coastline had dropped below sea level in many pfaces and sea water was intruding into the ground‐water basins. Various methods of recharge were tried to alleviate the problem. These methods and reasons for using them are presented in this article.
