Nitrates in ground water present a problem. Since they come from many sources—both natural and man‐related—many methods must be used to reduce their entry into drinking‐water supplies. Here some of the most prevalent sources of nitrates are discussed, and ways the water‐resource manager can inhibit the occurrence of nitrates in ground water are presented.
