The ability of a coating material to withstand the torturous process of wear is not the only criterion involved in its selection. Preparation of the surfaces of the valve to obtain adherence, handling characteristics of the coating, and overall economics—even the question as to whether the coating will be available years hence for whatever jobs are necessary—all play a role in material selection.
