The availability of 1970 census tapes and of numerous tape‐processing centers adds a degree of flexibility in the use of the 1970 census that has never been possible previously. The census indicates that there has been a slowing down of population growth. Growth has been heavily concentrated in the sub‐urban parts of metropolitan areas. The heavy movement of blacks from the South into northern and western cities continues. Housing has increased faster than population. The age makeup of the US population assures a very large increase in the number of young adults over the next twenty years, so that a record number of marriages and babies, and tremendous pressure on the housing supply can be anticipated.
