Until the development of the Coulter apparatus for measuring coagulation, researchers were limited because the various other methods used gave information about only one property of the suspension. This paper, describing the advantages and limitations of the Coulter counter, will be followed in a later issue by a companion paper on comparative techniques in coagulation testing prepared by the authors for the 1970 Annual Conference.
