In order to understand the relationship of the hydrolysis reaction to the reactions of other nucleophilic or basic groups with the metal ion, a series of studies were initiated with the overall objective of determining the composition of these complexes under the conditions of concern in water. These conditions included very dilute solutions, and reaction times that may not permit equilibrium to be reached. The system initially studied was the simplest possible, containing only aluminum, hydrogen, hydroxide, and perchlorate ions. The procedures used were essentially the same as those reported by Singley and Black in the studies on the hydrolysis of iron (III), and therefore involved the potentiometric titration of solutions of aluminum perchlorate with sodium hydroxide under N 2 . The sample was stirred continuously, using a magnetic stirrer, and the pH was monitored, using a recording pH meter. The sodium hydroxide solution was added continuously, using a syringe pump.
