An unusual opportunity for water filtration research occurred recently in Greenville, Texas. Two of four filter beds at the municipal plant were converted to mixed‐media units; the other two beds remained as conventional rapid sand filters. Additional control and monitoring equipment was added at the time of the changeover, making it possible to operate both filter systems simultaneously and in parallel, and to examine relative performance in detail. A series of plant‐scale investigations were undertaken during 1966‐67. Some results and pertinent conclusions are presented in this article.
