The objective of this article was to put into perspective the general principles of water pollution control legislation for the period 1948‐1966, and to consider the recent changes as part of the continuous program of legislative review and reappraisal by Congress. Except for a beginning section on general policy, the sections of the paper follow the principal parts of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act as amended, enacted by the Congress October 17, 1966, and approved by the President, November 3, 1966. (P.L. 89‐753.) A final section is concerned with Executive Orders and other significant administrative actions which also play an important role in the control of water pollution.
