This article discusses design criteria that are essential to a properly functioning water system under conditions that exist in developing countries. Emphasis has been placed upon the necessity for including in design and specification considerations the concept of obtaining a supply or plant that will be maintained and operated after it is installed. From a practical viewpoint, this means having and applying knowledge of the cultural, social, and economic practices of the people for whom the supply is being provided. It also involves making provision for the proper training of those who will operate the plant.
